Barrell Bourbon Mizunara Cask Finish Series

Let's dive into the Barrell Bourbon Cask Finish Series: Mizunara.  This limited release from Barrell Craft Spirits combines their blending and finishing expertise to create a unique bourbon finished in Mizunara oak barrels.

Here are some key details and my review.

  • Classification: Blend of Straight Bourbons
  • Company: Barrell Craft Spirits
  • Distillery: Sourced from undisclosed distilleries in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee
  • Proof: 116.42% abv
  • Age: 6 Years (Blend of 6, 7, 8, 9, and 14-year-old bourbons)
  • Mashbill: 76% Corn, 20% Rye, 4% Malted Barley (Derived from the blend)
  • Colour: Amontillado Sherry
Nose: Dried apricot, raisin, and black cherry upfront, followed by hints of caramel, vanilla, and honey.  Peppery seasoned oak adds a savory touch, while coconut and sandalwood (characteristic of Mizunara oak) emerge on the backend.

Palate: A mix of dry leather, sandalwood, toffee, and toasted oak dominates.  Juicy dark berry and honey play supporting roles.  Soft peppery spice builds throughout, creating a harmonious flavor profile.

Finish:  The peppery spice continues into the finish, blending with leather and sandalwood.  Sweeter notes of butterscotch, honey, and warm caramel take over, resulting in a delicately complex bourbon.

In summary, Barrell Bourbon Cask Finish Series: Mizunara offers a delightful blend of flavors, showcasing the rare Mizunara oak influence.
